The African Cassava Agronomy Initiatives\n(ACAI) project held training session for the government extension officers on\nthe use of Fertilizer Recommendation (FR), Weed Management and Best Planting\nPractices (WM\/BPP) and Scheduled Planting and High Starch Content (SPHS) and\noperating various formats of the AKILIMO tool kit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ACAI team trained 67 participants from Bagamoyo\nand Chalinze districts in Pwani region and Handeni districts from Tanga region in\na four-day workshop held in Bagamoyo in September. The training aimed at building\nthe capacity of extension agents to train smallholder cassava farmers on the\nproper application of the AKILIMO agronomy advice tools as well as applying the\nbest agronomic practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ACAI project coordinator for Tanzania, Freddy\nBaijukya presented the functions and importance of using new technology like\nAKILIMO Decision Support Tool for agricultural development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSmart phones have a lot of packages that\ncan help farmers in collecting and accessing important information about cassava\ncrop\u201d. Said Freddy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The training included sessions on how to\nupload data to the ACAI platform by using Open Data Kit (ODK) that will be used\nto calibrate the AKILIMO prediction engine. Participants were also trained on\nhow to interpret AKILIMO recommendations and how to apply in their farming\nactivities. Participants acknowledged that the training has been an advantage\nto both extension officer and farmers on increasing awareness that will help to\nimprove agronomic practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe training gave me enough knowledge on\nthe adoption of new technology in cassava farming, I will apply the knowledge\nand disseminate it to other farmers\u201d noted Ally Salahanga, an extension agent\nfrom Chalinze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The District Agriculture, Irrigation and\nCooperative officer (DAICO) from Chalinze, Jovin Bararata recognized the\nefforts made by ACAI in disseminating AKILIMO tool and delivering the necessary\nknowledge to different regions in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The participatory approach of the training\ngave room for participants to give feedback on how they find AKILIMO tool to be\nhelpful in supporting their decision making in cassava growing practices.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
