Cassava value chain actors in Tanzania launched an association that will act as an umbrella body to address issues facing cassava producers and processors in the country. Tanzania Cassava Producers and Processors Association (TACAPPA) was inaugurated at a two-day event at\u00a0<\/span>Mwalimu<\/span>\u00a0Nyerere Trade Fair Ground in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania<\/span>\u00a0on the 7<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0and 8<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0of February.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

TACAPPA will\u00a0<\/span>serve as a uniting entity for the cassava sector,\u00a0<\/span>promot<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>cassava production, establish market linkages, creat<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0awareness about the use of quality cassava seed and build<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0capacity of members.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

IITA\u00a0<\/span>was represented at the event by a\u00a0<\/span>team of staff from Dar es Salaam station<\/span>\u00a0led by the ACAI<\/span>\u00a0project coordinator for Tanzania Freddy\u00a0Baijukya<\/span>.<\/span> ACAI staff from Tanzania were part of the IITA team and hosted a booth to showcase and demonstrate the use of AKILIMO tools in providing cassava agronomy advice. The<\/span> IITA team also showcased included\u00a0<\/span>NURU Application, the Seed Tracker and cassava transformation technologies by IITA Dar- Youth\u00a0<\/span>Agripreneur<\/span>\u00a0group<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking at the event,\u00a0Baijukya\u00a0<\/span>assured TACAPPA of IITA\u2019s supports in the provision\u00a0of new and appropriate technologies to improve cassava productivity, post-harvest management, and cassava transformation<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

TACAPPA was inaugurated by the Deputy Minister for Agriculture Omari\u00a0<\/span>Tebwete<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Mgumba<\/span>\u00a0who pledged government support to the new body. He highlighted a number of government initiatives predating TACAPPA including cassava breeding programs through Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute, TARI, a national cassava production campaign, signing cassava market protocol with China among many others.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Other officials who graced the occasion include the Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Stella\u00a0<\/span>Manyaya<\/span>, and\u00a0<\/span>Zacharia\u00a0<\/span>Muyengi<\/span>, the acting director for the Agricultural Sector Development Program (ASDP-II) in the Office of the Prime Minister.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

TACAPPA will become an important platform for the transfer and dissemination of new technologies developed by IITA and other agencies to improve the cassava sector in Tanzania.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
